As steam generators heat water to produce steam, the impurities are boiled out creating distilled water and the pure vapor enters the steam room. These impurities are known as lime or calcium and settle in the bottom of the tank and attach themselves to the components of the tank such as the water probe and heating element. This is what a generator looks like after operating with Lake Michigan water for 10 years.
