Title: steam shower benching
Post by: Dianna on February 01, 2009, 11:29:27 AM
What size benching should I put into the steam shower? I am adding a large steam room in the basement next to the exercize room, 5'x7'x8'.

Comfortable seating in the steam shower is the key to relaxation and, while there are many options for shower seating, built-in benching with a smooth, solid surface is ideal for comfort, decor, durability, and space.

Consider how you want to use your steam room and this will help determine what size bench you need.  If you would like to lie down, run your bench the length of your longest wall.  If you want the bench length to be optional on a long wall, install a fold down/up seat at one end and run your bench the remaining length.  If you will have multiple bathers, consider two-tier benching to provide additional seating and different "heat zones".  Since heat rises, the higher the seat, the higher the temperature in the room so two-tier benching allows multiple bathers to share the same room at the same time, yet at different temperatures.  The bench can also be utilized in lieu of a shower caddy/rack and as that ever important foot rest for the lady who shaves in the shower.

Remember, the most important aspect of a steam shower is your comfort.  Be sure to consider the depth and height of the bench and to select dimensions that are most comfortable for all bathers and all uses.  See the article below for specifics on bench design and construction.

Would the same apply for Sauna Benching?

In a dry sauna, what is the recommened bench height and depth?

Sauna room benching is much the same in theory.

Sauna rooms are traditionally built with integral wood benching and, space permitting, two levels of benching with enough depth to stretch out on.
