Living in the midwest temperatures, I believe it should be a requirement for every home to have steam.  That is why we are building our steam room.  My question is, if the generator is mounted in an area of the house that is prone to freezing temperatures (like a crawlspace), will the generator freeze? What if we get a generator with a pre heating feature?

Yes, the generator will freeze.  The generator MUST be installed in an area where it will be protected from freezing.  No exceptions!

Read more about potential locations to install your generator here http://www.steamsaunabath.com/design/all-about-steam-rooms-and-steam-shower-design-steam-generator-location.htm#location
