Title: Hard water causing lime in steam shower equipment
Post by: Dani on November 24, 2009, 07:15:25 AM
We have been told that hard water is causing lime in our system.  How can we manage this so we are not constantly going down?

Is this a commercial or residential application?
Do you know the make & model of the steam equipment?

We have an Amerec AK10 but friends of our have a Thermasol Pro 450.  We both live on wells and have had this issue of our steam rooms being inoperable.  What can we do so we do not lose our steam rooms as our families use the steam on a daily basis. We don't like it when we have to have service companies out frequently to what they say clean our equipment.

For simplicity, Residential steam generators are like Hot Water heaters.  They boil the water leaving sediment behind.
Manufacturers of Hot Water heaters state you should drain them periodically to increase the life of the tank.
The maintenance between a Thermasol and Amerec cannot be compared as they are built differently so it's not apples-to-apples comparison.  I would be curious though on how often your friends "powerflush" their Thermasol system.

Anyway, back to your system.  The only maintenance is draining the tank.  The plumber should have put a handle on the drain port so you can drain.  If there is a silver & brass box on the drain port then you have an automated drain that drains itself after each use.
Also, if you hook up Hot Water as you water feed instead of cold, you will then get pre-filtered water since it came from the Hot Water heater.

Make sense?

There are also many water filters and system available that would certainly alleviate these issues for you. Contact a project coordinator at 1 800 707 2862 for more information.
