Title: How much increase in electric bill?
Post by: househunter on January 09, 2012, 09:01:03 PM
Hi Everyone,

I am looking at buying a house.  The old owner of a house I like had a steam sauna and a hot tub (along with 4 kids).  I called the power company and the High/avg/low for house (which has a HP and a wood stove) is $362/$240/$170.  These are REALLY high for the area.  The house was built in the mid 1990s and has a heat pump.  I figure the hot tub was $30-$50/month

I am wondering about what you think it would cost a month for the sauna (since it is no longer in the house)?  I know it could vary by a bit but I was wondering about ballpark figures.

Thanks so much!

This varies based on the electric company in use and their charge for kilowatts per hour so it is difficult to give you a ballpark for the month but in general a wet steam shower and a dry sauna take pennies to operate and are used on demand.  They do not draw any electric when not in use.  A hot tub takes a lot of electric since it runs all the time to keep the water at a certain temperature.

Good to know.  Thanks so much Jennifer!  Guess it's probably something else kicking up the electric bill.

Thanks again
