This unit is 12 years old, sees an average of 3 uses a week.

We have hard water which is softened with water softener that uses salt.

No drain connected (there's none nearby where it's installed).

Never been maintained, descaled, flushed up until this week when it started having problems for the first time.

I took the temp probe cap off, opened the drain plug and drained it out.  A lot of light blue solids in there (water softener sediment?).  I poured in some citric acid solution and let it sit overnight (after heating it a few mins.)  Drained it out and a bunch of sediment came out.  Flushed it several times with fresh water after that. Shined a flashlight in there and there's still visible sediment, but there's not much more I can do about that, I think.

Put the temp probe back in, turned on the steambath, it heated up to about 81F (from 65F).  Not much improvement (heated to 75F before).  There's visible steam and the steam pipe coming from the generator is very hot.

Any suggestions on what to do next?  Where to troubleshoot?

Check the voltage and amp draw to the unit if you can.  Chances are you need to replace the heating element and the water level probe.  These vary by generation of generator so I would check with a Technical Specialist at 800-707-2862 to determine the needed parts.
