What is the recommended steam line length for residential application?

It depends on the manufacturer.  Most are 50 feet, some are 20 feet with an extra adjusted cubic foot sizing of 1 cubic foot for every foot over 20 feet.

Check out our sizing tool - click here Sizing Tool (http://www.steamsaunabath.com/steam-generator-sizing-tool.html)

I've heard many say an ideal steam run length would be 6-8 feet from the enclosure.  Is this true?

The shorter the steam line the better.
But if you are going long and calculating correctly, all will be ok.

keep in mind if you go beyond 15' or so you probably want to insulate the steam line. both to prevent condensation and to retain the heat all the way to the generator.
