Title: Cement Board or Denshield for use in steam shower
Post by: Katri on August 27, 2009, 12:16:52 PM
We are considering using a man-made stone material for the shower base, ceiling and walls. Denshield is a name that has come up frequently. Are you familiar with this product? Maybe we should just use cement board.

DensShield is an acrylic-coated glass-mat faced treated gypsum board. Durock, Hardiebacker, and Wonderboard are fiberglass mesh reinforced cementitious backer boards. One is basically waterproofed gypsum (drywall), the others are basically concrete. Gypsum products are easier to install but cement board will last a lifetime.  Additionally, the DensShield manufacturer states that it is limited to use with Ceramic or Plastic tile and you stated you are using a stone material.

If you are interested in using the DensShield, I would recommend calling the manufacturer and getting their installation recommendations for use in a steam shower.  I would also ask them about their warranty in such an installation.
