Title: Mr. Steam overheating
Post by: Alex on March 13, 2012, 11:09:45 AM
Hello, we installed a Mr Steam in 1996 into our newly built house. It has worked perfectly; however, lately, it gets way too hot. Is there a way that we can put a thermostat on it?

Gail Barbee

Thank you

Gail,  I would love to help you out here but considering the generator is 16 years old it is probably near the end of its useful life. There is a temperature control available but it costs $750.00. I would not recommend putting that much money in a generator that old.
Besides, I don't think that is your problem. If it was not overheating the room before it should not be now. I am thinking the problem is probably within the generator tank itself. The heating element is inside the water tank and is designed to heat the water to make steam. Over a long period of time the lime and other minerals found in water tend to build up in the water tank. The more it builds up the less room for water in the tank. But the heating element stays the same; consequently using the same power to heat less and less water so it is now creating steam at a much higher rate and temperature which is causing you room to overheat.
I hope I explained that well. So the bottom line is it is time to think about replacing the equip
