Title: Steam Shower Pipe Insulation
Post by: Jenny on March 19, 2009, 09:51:08 AM
Should steam shower piping be insulated?

Is it ok to have uninsulated copper piping near a wood stud or can it cause a fire hazard?

What is the upside & downside, if any, to pipe insulation?

If pipes should be insulated, what type of pipe insulation should be used?

1. I would definitely recommend insulating your steam line.

2.  Fire is not the concern... moisture from condensation on the steam line and wood are the perfect recipe for mold.

3. The upsides are a thicker steam output and mold protection, among others.  I'll let you know if I come up with any downsides.

4.  Use only a vinyl-backed fiberglass pipe wrap insulation properly rated for heat.
