Title: Mr Steam replacement control
Post by: Tyler on February 14, 2012, 04:35:56 PM
I have a customer that recently purchased a home with a Mr Steam generator. It may be pretty old. I need to replace the temperature controller, MS-100574DIG. I have a air button inside the shower. Can you help?

Thank you.

That is very old and no longer available.
Is it the digital control that is the issue or the generator?  What color is the generator?  Can you find a red and white round sticker with a date on it or find the serial number?
Have you checked if the air switch is ok?  Sometimes the air switch is in the off position without the bather realizing it since it does not have an indicator light.  The digital control would still light up but the generator will be paused if the air switch is in the off position.

If none of the above works, then it's time to invest in a new system.  The new eTempo control can be mounted in the old air switch location.

Let us know how it goes.  We'd like to hear that you're steaming again.

This generator has some miles on it. Probably built in the early to mid 90s. That temperature controller has been obsolete for many years but if the generator works well you can replace the controller with a Smart control. You can use either the Smart/One which will allow you to turn the machine on or off but it you want temperature control you will need to go with the  Smart/Plus control. Either of these are fairly pricey and will not work with the newer generators so you may wish to explore the possibility of starting with everything new. Whatever your way you wish to go give the guys at steamsaunabath.com a call at 1 800 707 2862 and they will help you make a decision on what is Right for you.

Alex, you are on the right track.  Depending on the age of the steam generator, it may need a PC Board in addition to the Smart control.  It may also need some rewiring.  Only a skilled electrician or Mr Steam Technical Specialist, such as SteamSaunaBath, should work on this unit.
Smart controls are considered obsolete as well and only available as a replacement control for a short period of time.
If you chose to go this route and select the Smart Plus temperature control, you will have to cut a new 4" x 4" square out of the wall inside the shower as this control is intended for inside the shower.  Or, you can mount the Smart Plus outside and install a remote temperature sensor.
Between the cost of the new control, PC Board and labor, it will likely cost near as much for a new unit with a warranty.

I absolutely agree with Jennifer. The options are there but you could put a lot of money in an old generator. If it goes to it's final resting place you will have a box of spare part's you cannot use. Look at a replacement generator.
