A friend of mine has a steam system made by Roma.  He tells me that while he is steaming, every once in a while it purges hot water out of a pipe in his shower.  He has a pipe and a steam head.
My steam shower doesn't do that and doesn't have an extra pipe.

What is the difference between our two steamers?
Why would he get hot water while he is steaming?

The drain is likely piped into the shower.
A drain and pressure relief valve (PRV) should never be piped to the interior of a shower for the very reason your asking this question, scolding hot water emits during the steam cycle and the bather can get burned.

Roma drains during the steam cycle while others do not drain unless you manually drain it or if there is a time delay autodrain installed.

The Roma generator installation instructions do not recommend have the drain piped to the shower.
