Our sauna trips on Hi Limit often.  Is this normal?
What is causing it?

Lot of possibilities on that question.
first thing to do in remove all the rocks from the sauna, wash them off and reinstall gently. What happens over time is the rocks settle and compact the bottom of the heater causing the heat to stay in the coils rather than floe up thru the rocks into the room. The excessive heat causes the hi-limit to go off. If the hi-limit trips often and you keep resetting it the hi-limit itself could be in need of replacement.

Take caution in washing the rocks.  You don't want soaps & chemicals.
Some times you need to purchase new rocks.  Go through your current rocks and throw the little ones away, keep the best ones and then add in some new.

While rocks breaking down can cause a restriction in air flow you also need to make sure the room has proper ventilation.

An intake vent should exist on the wall behind the heater and the outtake vent needs to be on a wall, preferably across from the heater, near the ceiling.

Members tamper with the temperature sensor with wet paper towels & water tossing.  This practice is abusive and breaks the sensor.  The room gets too hot then trips on Hi Limit.

Check into all these scenarios and let us know how it goes.
