Title: steam generator keeps popping the circuit breaker
Post by: Michael on April 10, 2012, 09:30:40 AM
I am having problems with my American steam ASD-A
everytime I turn it on the circuit breaker pops. I have the electrician here and he can't figure it out. Can you help me?

You didn't give us much information. I'm guessing the generator has worked well for the past few years and this just came on suddenly. There are not too many reasons the circuit breaker would pop. I would guess wire size or breaker size but if it has been working for some time that should not be an issue. Perhaps a short somewhere or most likely the element burned out which I think might cause that.

No, this is a new installation. Generator was still in the box and I'm just now getting around to installing it.

Okay, that's a whole different situation. Ask your electrician what kind of power he is running to the generator? It should be 240V, 50 AMP breaker and at least #8 wire.

I spoke to the contrator and he said he is running 240V on a 60 amp GFCI and #8 wire.

Okay, I'm starting to get the picture. Tell your electrician to remove the GFCI and hook up generator directly and let me know how that works out for you.

Hey Earl, It's working like a charm now. I thought everything required a GFCI.
Now if I can just figure out how to work this control.

Unless a manufacturer tells you differently never put a GFCI on a steam generator. It will cause you problems every time.
Regarding the control; I will send you a manual.

Take another look at the answers from April 10Th. If you replaced the GFCI breaker with another GFCI breaker you will still have the same issue. There indeed may be another cause but first try hooking you generator to a non GFGCI breaker and see what happens.

All steam bath generator manufacturers state to not use a GFCI breaker.  It will trip nearly everytime.  The installation requires a non-GFCI breaker.
