What is better for a steam generator, to filter the water, or to use a softner?

Let me first state that I am no water quality expert.  However, the "perfect" setup for the well-being of your steam generator would be to first filter then soften the water.  Regular maintenance draining also plays a big part in keeping your steam generator in premium operating condition so it can do the same for you!
