Title: Steamist Model LT-65 trips main fuse
Post by: Lou on November 15, 2012, 10:06:44 AM
I own a Steamist Model LT-65. It worked for many years. It now trips the main fuse every time I try to use it. I would appreciate any help in trying to troubleshoot and fix it.

Steamist LT-65 steam bath generators are very reliable. Their useful life is anywhere between 10-15 years depending on water quality and usage.
A breaker issue does not necessarily mean the steam generator is the concern. Breakers can weaken over time.
To troubleshoot this concern, you would need a electric multimeter and/or a amp meter. The goal would be to verify the amperage draw on the 220VAC circuit serving the steam bath generator with the breaker and steam bath generator both in the on position. The LT-65 draws 27Amps and should have a 40Amp breaker. While performing this test, if the amperage never exceeds 27Amps (+or-5%) and the breaker trips, the breaker would be the concern. If the Amperage rockets past 27 and the breaker trips, it is most likely a heating element concern. If the breaker trips immediately before any reading is possible, this would also point to the heating element or a faulty wire issue. You would then need to isolate the steam bath generator to perform some tests and measure the resistance (ohms) of the heating element to determine if it is indeed faulty.
A word of caution! 220VAC is dangerous. We do not recommend any "non-certified" individual perform these types of test. We can certainly recommend a repair team in your area should you require assistance.
If the element is faulty, it is recommended to look at a new steam generator.
