I have a 1996 SM-79 with a TC-120 control. Can I use the new TC-150 control on this generator without modifications?

Yes.  A generator from the year 1996 should have the 6-pin control cable connector.
TC controls are compatible with the new SMC controls.  TSG controls are not compatible.
The difference to note is octagon versus square.
The new Square control should be able to cover up the same area on the wall that was covered by the Octagon control.
